Introduction
MLX joins Apple silicon Macs into one network for AI work. These docs cover the parts you can program against and the rules you can check.
What MLX is
MLX is a network of Macs and a ledger that pays them.
- MLX Node is a menu bar app. It runs AI jobs that the network hands out while a Mac is idle or when its owner starts it. The Mac is paid in MLX, hour by hour.
- The AI App Store at apps.mlx.app is a curated catalogue of AI apps, tools and open models for the Mac and iPhone: how MLX Node finds you the best AI for your Mac. It is live on the web and in MLX Node, in a window of its own.
- MLX Wallet is a passkey wallet at wallet.mlx.app. It holds MLX and USDC, buys dedicated seats and links Macs.
- The sequencer orders every signed transaction into hash-linked blocks, signs each block, and logs every block in an append-only Merkle log. That log is anchored hourly on Solana and daily on Bitcoin.
What you can do with these docs
| If you want to… | Read |
|---|---|
| Call a model running on your own Mac from code | Local AI |
| Find AI apps, tools and models for a Mac, or read the store's catalogue | AI App Store, Catalogue API |
| Show network data in your app, or analyse it | Network API, Open data |
| Move MLX or USDC from your own code | Transactions |
| Check that the ledger wasn't rewritten, or that a balance is right | Integrity |
| Check what a seat or a Mac earns, and why | Protocol |
| Build a client that does network work | MLX Node |
| Buy AI jobs from the network | Compute API (pilot) |
How these docs are made
- Numbers come from the code. Prices, rates, limits and lock-ins are filled in at build time from the constants the network runs on. If the code changes, the docs change with the next release.
- Live values are never written down. Prices, balances and counts are read from the API; every page links the endpoint that returns them.
- Every page is also markdown. Add
.mdto any page's address, or use "Copy page" at the top. docs.mlx.app/llms.txt lists every page for AI assistants. - What isn't built yet says so. Pages about things still in a pilot are marked Pilot.
